The manuscript contains part of the text - books 15 to 22 - from De civitate Dei by Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430). Manuscript 108 dates back to the second half of the fifteenth century. It was originally owned by Ter Doest Abbey and became part of Ten Duinen Abbey after a merger. The text discusses the contrast between the subjects of the Civitas Dei and the Civitas terrena. The miniature on Folio IV is an illustration of this contrast. It portrays the Civitas eterni supplicci opposite the Civitas paradise voluptatis. Cain is being pulled towards Lucifer by human-consuming devils. Abel, on the other hand, is being lifted above the fortified city by angels. On Folio 127r a miniature portrays the city of God with Mary and Jesus standing under an arch behind golden city walls, accompanied by an angel making music. On top of the towers of the city walls, two angels are praying. A historiated initial on the same page shows Saint Augustine. He is kneeling with his hands folded around a heart, a display of his love for God and his neighbours. Saint Augustine is depicted as a bishop with his mitre and staff. The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Sarah Vanroye]
