Summary
In manuscript 537 five texts on grammar have been bound together: (ff. 1r-46v) the Ars maior by the fourth-century grammatian Aelius Donatus, together with a commentary called the Ars Brugensis, erroneously attributed in the manuscript to Remigius of Auxerre (d. ca. 908); (ff. 46v-48v) the Tractatus magistri Bernardi Lombardi de dubio accentu, possibly by the Dominican friar Bernardus Lombardus (fl. 1323-1332); (ff. 49r-70r) the Brito metricus, a treatise in verse on Greek and Hebrew words by the twelfth-century William Brito, archdeacon of Ely; (ff. 72r-98v) the Notule magistri Cesaris, an anonymous grammatical text, possibly written by the thirteenth-century Petrus de Ysolella; and (ff. 98v-104v) the Theorica sive ars dictatoria, a tractate by the Italian rhetorician Johannes Bondi Aquileiensis (fl. ca. 1300). The manuscript was possibly copied in Flandres; the first three texts during the fourteenth century; the other at the end of that century. The difference between these two units is not just visible in the script, but also in the layout. The first unit mostly has two columns per page (with the exception of the Brito metricus); the second has a single column per page. Initials have been drawn in red and blue ink; in the second unit, only the first two initials have been added. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
