Summary
As is the case with Ms. 17, this manuscript contains the first ten books of Raoul of Flaix's (Radulfus Flaviacensis), a mid-twelfth-century Benedictine monk, commentary on the Bible book Leviticus. Unlike Ms. 17, it is clear that from the outset this codex was intended to be the first in a two volume set. An explicit on the final leaf states: 'explicit liber decimus pars prima huius operis'. The text is complete and clean, with only a few markings near passages deemed interesting. Possibly the volume was copied in the scriptoria of either Ter Doest or Ten Duinen. An ownership inscription on the final leaf, 'Liber sancte Marie de Thosan, scriptus a quodam monacho cuius nomen scribatur in libro vite', does not only reveal the book's provenance, but also suggests that it was written at the behest of the monastery. The text is organized in two columns per page, with decorated initials alternatively in red and blue ink. Rubrics and chapter numbers are added in red ink. The cross-shaped stamp of Ten Duinen is found above the colofon, and the volume is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type, although without the gilded crest of the abbot.
