Summary
The manuscript contains the De civitate Dei by Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430. Manuscript 106 dates back to the second half of the fifteenth century and was part of Ten Duinen Abbey library. Folio 21v contains a large, multicoloured initial with floral motives against a golden background. On Folio 22, Saint Augustine is portrayed as a bishop and Doctor of the Church with his mitre, staff and book. The eagle symbolizes his erudition. Augustine is teaching a diverse group of people. This includes people of different religious orders, which again emphasizes the universal character of his teachings. The marginal decorations consist of blue and golden acanthus leaves and green branches, blossoming with flowers and fruits. Other figurative elements are added: a peacock, a small bird, two barking dogs who are hunting a hare. These last images depict a hunting scene. The illuminator responsible for the miniature is Bruges miniaturist Willem Vrelant (d. 1481). The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type, with gold tooling.
