Manuscript 515 is a fourteenth-century codex combining three texts on theology and philosophy. The first tekst (ff. 1r-31r) is the Summa de anima; one of the main writings by Franciscan theologian Jean de la Rochelle (Johannes de Rupella, d. 1245), a student of Alexander of Hales. This summa, a medieval genre aiming at synthesizing all knowledge regarding a particular subject, discusses the nature of the soul and made use not only of Christian texts, but also of the newly translated works of Aristotle and Plato. The second text (ff. 32r-62v) is the De fide orthodoxa by the early medieval monk John of Damascus. Hardly an original work, it was written as a summary of writings of the early Fathers of Eastern Christianity and was one of the first works that systemised doctrine in a coherent and organized framework. As such, it was an important precursor to scholastic thought. The final and largest text (ff. 63r-181v) is the Distinctiones Byardi, a dictionary of terms and words found in the scriptures, written by the thirteenth-century theologian Nicholas of Biard. The manuscript is written in a Gothic textualis script, with each page containing two columns. An exception to this is the list of contents of the text by Biard, which are found in four columns. The manuscript has been extensively decorated throughout: all initials have been added in alternatively red and blue ink, with decorations in penwork in the opposite colour. This penwork often includes long tails running down in the margins. Special attention has been given to the first initial of each text. The manuscript is bound in a modern full leather binding. It was originally part of the library of Ten Duinen, as the cross-shaped stamp of the abbey is found on the first and final leaves. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
